A manhunt is underway after a Baltimore County Police officer was killed while she was investigating a suspicious vehicle Monday afternoon in a residential neighborhood in Perry Hall.

Police are searching for at least one armed suspect, but later reports indicated there might have been up to four people involved.

Police told ABC7's Brad Bell that the officer was wearing a body camera and that footage is being analyzed.

Police said it's possible a burglary was in process when the officer arrived. Damage was found on a patio door at one of the homes nearby.

Witnesses said that a Jeep Wrangler ran over the officer. They also heard a gunshot. Details of the cause of death have not been released.

Police said they have recovered the Jeep. And a manhunt is underway for those responsible for killing the officer.

Police spokesperson Cpl. Shawn Vincent said the officer was taken to Franklin Square Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. She had been with the police department for nearly four years.

The suspicious vehicle was first reported at 2 p.m. in the unit block of Linwen Way, in the area of Belair Road and Klausmier Road, police said.

Four elementary schools, Perry Hall, Seven Oaks, Carney and Gunpowder, were being held over on alert status. Carney released students around 6 p.m., while Gunpowder, Perry Hall and Seven Oaks released students around 9:30 p.m.

Police said students would not be dismissed at the normal time and asked parents to not go to the schools before the children were released at the elementary schools.

Gov. Larry Hogan says Maryland State Police are assisting Baltimore County Police in the search for the suspect.

Residents in the area of Belair Road and Klausmier Road are being told by police to shelter in place and drivers are being told to avoid the area.

Police held a press conference Monday afternoon:

It's not clear yet what exactly took place leading up to the incident.
