WASHINGTON (SBG) - President Donald Trump and congressional democrats continue to fight over border wall funding.

President Trump is trying to fulfill a campaign promise by demanding $5 billion for a border wall. That averages about $40 per American household.

“It would be one-tenth of 1 percent of the proposed federal budget in that year which is over $4 trillion,” said Alex Nowrasteh an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute.

The entire U.S.-Mexico border is about 2000 miles long. The Department of Homeland Security plans to use the $5 billion to build 215 miles of border wall. At a cost of $23 million per mile. The majority of the wall will be constructed in Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley areas of Texas.

“The $5 billion, the $5.6 billion approved by the House is such a small amount compared to the level of the problem,” Trump said.

Nowrasteh said that total falls short.

“This $5 Billion border wall will build less 300 miles of that, leaving about five-sixths border unwalled,” Nowrasteh said.

Democrats take control of the house Thursday and plan to reopen the government by passing a short-term spending bill that will give the Department of Homeland Security $1.3 billion for border security. But no money for the president’s border wall.

Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., says there is a need to look for better technology for the walls construction.

“There is not going to be money for a 19th century inefficient wall. I think we have to look at better technology and better ways with securing our border,” Lieu said.

The $5 billion that the president wants is just for this year. The committee for a responsible federal budget predicts the entire wall could end up costing $25 billion. At a cost of $200 per U.S. household.
