Final Word: Word Police Fail
ST. LOUIS —
The Chicago Tribune is the latest mainstream media outlet to play "word police", telling all of us what words are offensive and inappropriate to say and use. This time, the word is 'alien', as in 'illegal aliens' who are in the United States. The Tribune took issue with the U.S. Department of Justice under President Trump using the term.
The problem is, the government via the Internal Revenue Service uses the term illegal alien, because there is a difference between an 'alien' and an 'immigrant'. An 'alien' is someone trespassing in the U.S. illegally, while 'immigrant' is someone who has passed through customs or some government entity. So, the word 'alien' is not offensive, it is the legal term used by the U.S. government to differentiate between the two.
Jamie's talking about it in his Final Word.
