Porsha Owens worked as a school safety resource officer with the Riverview Gardens School District. She was killed in front of her three young children while trying to take them to daycare Monday morning. Police say Mark Haywood shot her and tried to steal her car.

The man police say shot and killed a St. Louis County woman in front of her three young children is now in custody and charged with murder, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

18-year-old Mark Haywood of North County was charged with one count of 2nd Degree Murder, one count of 1st Degree Robbery, and two counts of Armed Criminal Action by the St. Louis County Attorney's Office. He is being held on a $1,000,000 cash only bond.

Police say that 28-year-old Porsha Owens was walking her children to her car in her driveway Monday morning in Castle Point when Haywood approached them and demanded the keys to her car. She refused, so police say he shot her.

Owens' family members say that her 8-year-old son got help, then stayed with his mother and held on to her until an ambulance arrived.

Porsha Owens worked as a school safety resource officer at the Riverview Gardens School District. She was taking her children, aged 3-8 to day care that morning before going to work.

Police say Haywood could not start the car and ran away with undisclosed property belonging to Owens. A police report filed Wednesday says Haywood confessed to shooting Owens and robbing her.
